Ozone Therapy

Toxins are generally harmful to humans. Does a poison, however, ever have the potential to be beneficial to health when used properly?

Three oxygen atoms combine to form the molecule ozone (O3). It is explosive and highly unstable in both liquid and solid forms. But, as a gas, this supercharged oxygen might have beneficial properties.

Ozone therapy: What is it?

Medical-grade ozone produced by an ozone generator is used in ozone therapy. The goal of ozone therapy is to raise your body’s oxygen levels.

Higher oxygen level might strengthen your immune system while encouraging recovery. It accomplishes this by replacing or repairing damaged cells through a process known as cell regeneration.

Administration of ozone therapy

Ozone gas can be administered in a variety of methods, but it shouldn’t be breathed in. Your lungs may become severely irritated and swollen as a result.

Ozone therapy can be administered using safer techniques like:

  • Applying it to your skin through the use of an ozone solution or by exposing a portion of your body to ozone gas inside of a protective enclosure (also known as an ozone sauna), often for wound healing.
  • Releasing gas into your body, usually through the vagina, rectum, or ears.
  • Blending your blood with it. In a procedure known as autohemotherapy, ozone gas can be dissolved in a sample of your blood and then reintroduced into your body via an IV.

Advantages of ozone therapy:

  • Support the immune system because ozone therapy stimulates and activates the immune system.
  • Increased oxygen delivery to your cells, tissues, and organs; improved blood circulation.
  • Stopping the growth and lowering the survival of pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
  • Decreased oxidative stress, which is the imbalance between antioxidant protection and cell-damaging free radicals that can cause inflammation and chronic disease.
  • It functions like an antioxidant or anti-inflammatory, and it could potentially be used for any type of inflammation, whether in a wound or related to conditions such as diabetes or arthritis.

It has also been studied for conditions such as:

  • Breathing disorders, like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Immune disorders such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Musculoskeletal disorders like disk herniation or carpal tunnel syndrome
